Some OEMs call them stick shifts or gear knobs. Whatever you call the factory shift knob atop the gear lever in your BMW car or SAV, it's more important than it seems. Yes, it may be nondescript among transmission parts, whether yours is manual or an automatic. However, between dependably and easily changing gears and not, an original BMW shift knob can make all the difference. That's not simply because of having a better grip than a bare shift lever, either. A good one also displays the correct direction in which to pull for every gear. Grab yours, step on the clutch if your car has a manual gearbox, and pull it, and you've gotten into gear. Many shift knobs may look the same, but the genuine BMW article comes made of everything from plastic to metal. If you drive a BMW performance vehicle, you might even have one made of carbon fiber. Others come wrapped in vinyl or luxurious leather, and their sizes and shapes vary as much as your taste is unique. Some, you can even get weighted; these reduce both shift time and effort. If your shift knob frays or wears excessively, tears, or if you want to add a dash of fetching style, replace it. The best for the job is OEM, as it'll fit right off the BMW production line.
